South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs seems to have lit a powder keg following its proposals to introduce marriage laws that allow polyandry.
According to the Green Paper on Marriages, a policy document published last week, the current marriage act does not promote equality. In a bid to fix this, the Department of Home Affairs is exploring the option of allowing women to marry more than one husband, in the same way, that polygamous men are allowed to marry more than one wife.
The Green Paper called for polyandry to be legally recognised as a form of marriage. Polyandry is a form of polygamy in which a woman takes two or more husbands at the same time. Polyandry is contrasted with polygyny, which involves one man taking two or more wives.
South Africans have until the end of June to comment on the department’s proposals.
Unsurprisingly, the proposal on polyandry is wreaking havoc across the country and has resulted in mixed reactions. Not just in South Africa, but across the world.
Some people have denounced the proposal of polyandry as being unAfrican while the more religious have cited this as a sign of the Biblical end of times. However, others have welcomed the proposal saying it is a boon for equality. Some are also poking fun at the alleged hypocrisy of people who believe in polygamy to be against polyandry.
Below are some of the reactions from people on social media to the issue of polyandry in South Africa.
Creating a space for Polyandry, is the last thing Home affairs should be focusing on. Their priorities should in protecting our borders, ensuring sovereignty for South African citizens . South Africans are daily loosing their country to foreigners who are embolden.

‘The possibilities of this huge step to introduce & legalise Polyandry in SA are endless. Start with lobola… Gents can now share that responsibility. Imagine a consortium of 5 couples in polygamous & polyandrous marriage/s” 🤭 pic.twitter.com/nrKKYqgqaw

Lol They will probably be opposed to it but eventually accept it. I still don’t understand what context this proposed law will be written under. Polygamy is recognized under customary marriages law, traditionaly polyandry was never a custom in africa.

Every good man I have met, I love. I just wish we live in a world where Polyandry is not seen as a Curse, I wish we live in a world with circle of sexually independent people.
Monogamy is Pain😭

If men can do it then it’s fair enough that polyandry be allowed. “Equality” as you mentioned

I don’t like men enough to marry one, nevermind multiple. But I want polyandry legalised, just to shake the patriarchs https://t.co/SB0JJh69Db

He says he can’t imagine men competing for time to have sex with their wife, in the event a woman has four husbands, for instance. 😂
He adds that according to custom and tradition, men aren’t allowed to have sex with a woman impregnated by another man.

You arent forced to participate in polyandry. Someone having the choice to have multiple husbands is none of your business unless you are one of the husbands…and even then divorce is an option comrades.
As you were.
