Zvishavane – An artisanal miner spent the last four days from Sunday buried underground after the chrome shaft he was working in collapsed and his lifeless body was only found at 4am today.

Even the use of an excavator to remove the earth above the miner could not help. The deceased continued communicating from Sunday afternoon until 3pm on Monday.

The incident took place at Manjere Ranches Mine in Zvishavane which is owned by Raphael Makurira. The deceased is Ellias Hungwe, 44 of Fourmiles Resettlement.

Large mining companies including Mimosa Mine, Sabi Gold Mine, and mining organisations like Mberengwa Miners Associations and Zvishavane Youth Miners Association were also involved in the rescue operation but their efforts were thwarted by the wet ground that kept falling, said sources that spoke to The Mirror.

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana warned artisanal miners to suspend their operations until heavy rains currently experienced throughout the country subsides.

Nomatter Topotsa thanked the large companies for their intervention.

Police came to the scene on Monday. However, Midlands spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko said he was not aware of the case.
